Created by Dr Arul James, MD, FRCA, FFPMRCA
Consultant in Anaesthesia and Chronic Pain Medicine, UK. Having passed his FRCA examinations at the first attempt alongside clinical work, Dr James created FRCA.APP to make structured examination preparation more accessible and flexible.
FRCA.APP is developed under his educational direction, with a team of anaesthetists who help plan, review and refine its learning material.
Dr James also created ARiRA, an online educational platform for ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia that uses 3D anatomy and augmented reality.

Learn it, retrieve it, keep it
FRCA.APP is designed around active recall and spaced practice — techniques with strong evidence for long-term learning. Why active recall works →
- 1
Understand
Read a structured chapter or learning hub topic and highlight what matters.
- 2
Retrieve
Answer SBAs on the same topic straight away, or explain it aloud to the FRCA.Ai Examiner.
- 3
Reflect
Use explanations, feedback and model answers to find the real gap.
- 4
Repeat, spaced
Let revision cards bring topics back just before you would forget them.
Exam preparation that fits your clinical life
Preparing for the FRCA alongside theatre lists, on-call shifts and family commitments requires flexibility. FRCA.APP brings structured learning, SBA practice, viva simulations and revision tools together online, so you can prepare at a time that works for you.
- No travel No journeys to a physical revision venue, and less time lost arranging repeated in-person sessions.
- Short sessions Study from home or anywhere suitable, in sessions that fit around theatre lists and on-call shifts.
- Repeated SBA practice Return to questions as often as you need, with an explanation for every answer.
- Spoken viva practice Practise vivas aloud with the FRCA.Ai Examiner whenever you have time, without arranging a partner.
- Formative feedback Personalised feedback after spoken practice, and model answers where provided.
- Structure and progress Curriculum-linked chapters, revision cards and progress tools, at your own pace.
Online preparation complements, and does not replace, supervised clinical training and teaching from consultants. For live, consultant-led teaching, see our masterclasses, booked separately.

Read the guide →Busy trainees need more than a pile of questions
FRCA candidates prepare around full-time clinical work, on-call rotas and family life. Much of the available material is either passive — long texts and lectures — or fragmented across question banks, notes and occasional viva practice.
FRCA.APP brings those pieces together. A structured textbook gives you something reliable to learn from. SBA practice, spoken viva practice and spaced revision make you retrieve and apply it. AI tools make practice and explanation available whenever you have twenty minutes — with clear labelling that their feedback is formative.
More about our approach →Frequently asked questions
Is FRCA.APP affiliated with the Royal College of Anaesthetists?
No. FRCA.APP is an independent educational platform created by Dr Arul James. It is not endorsed by or connected to the RCoA. Use the RCoA website for official exam information.
Can I try FRCA.APP before paying?
Yes. A free account opens a preview of all four courses — Primary Written, Primary Practical, Final Written and Final Practical — including real chapters, SBA questions, Tutor questions and, in Primary Practical, spoken mocks. No payment details are needed.
Does FRCA.APP cover the 2027 exam changes?
Yes. Primary SBA Practice has an AKT view, Primary Practical includes CASE station practice, and Final Practical includes FCPE station practice, alongside the current formats.
Is AI feedback an indication of whether I will pass?
No. All AI feedback on FRCA.APP is formative. It is designed to help you decide what to practise next and is not an examination result.
How is FRCA.APP different from the BookCPD masterclasses?
FRCA.APP courses are online subscriptions you use throughout your preparation. Masterclasses are separate, intensive live courses booked through BookCPD. Many candidates use both.
